Hare Kṛṣṇa Uttamasloka prabhu!
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!
I have a question regarding chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahamantra incorrectly. The maha mantra is a 16 syllable mantra as we know. If one is continuously chanting only 14 syllables with each mantra, for example:
Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare
what can be the result? Is this alright?
I understand that there are thousands of mantras in the Vedas and each lead to different places. If the mahamantra is not chanted including all 16 syllables does it lead to a different result other than what our acaryas are presenting?
Hare Kṛṣṇa!

There are several considerations. One is that there are "no hard and fast rules for chanting the Holy Names". So there will always be some benefit, even if they are chanted jokingly. However, that benefit is not the same as one who chants with a clear understanding and sincere intent and with feeling, having been guided by a sincere devotee in that regard. The benefits from chanting for all persons, regardless of their motives or position, all lead to spiritual progress in general, and for those who chant with proper guidance, the results will be most beneficial.

Haribol! Thank you so much for your kind response. From my understanding of what you have stated is that there is no loss when chanting any holy name, even if chanted incorrectly, but one who chants the mantra correctly with a clear understanding, with sincerity and feeling and has been properly guided then the benefits of this chanting is most beneficial. This leads to another question. What if one has a clear understanding, a sincere intent, chants with feeling and has been guided by a sincere devotee but still chants the mantra incorrectly out of habit or not being conscious of it at the time of chanting? Hare Kṛṣṇa! I am seeing after reading your response again that you have already answered my second question. My apologies. You have said that the benefits of chanting, regardless of their motives or position, all lead to spiritual progress but for those who chant it correctly the results are most beneficial. This is very clear to me. Thank you. Bhaktin Christina

You're welcome. I recommend that you read Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura's Harinama-cinatamani, which is a comprehensive study of chanting the Holy Names. If you don't have a copy, ask your husband to eMail me.

Thank you again. We do have a hard copy of Harinama-cintamini and I have read it a couple of times. I have also read your book recently and with all my new realizations I look forward to reading Harinama-cintamini again with a whole new outlook and understanding.
