I read the following line: "Such uncontrollable prema was in the hearts of the mothers towards Krishna in the form of their sons." and it made me wonder.
Normally love for one's own family is considered to be mundane attachment, and we are taught to water the root of the tree and not the branches by directing that love towards Krishna in full. Yet in this instance, the mothers were showering the branches with their love, and Krishna found a way to accept that love anyway. How could it be?
Also, my understanding of prema is that its pure love directed towards Krishna only. So how can what the mothers feel be considered as prema when the object of their affection is not Krishna but their own children?
Sure, you could say that its really Krishna pretending to be their child - but, in the mother's mind and heart, it's not Krishna, its their own children. This also makes me wonder how Krishna can find this kind of a relationship satisfying.

In this particular case this pastime was entirely transcendental and not of this world, so the analogy of watering the branches doesn't apply. These Vraja-vasi parents were already immersed in prema for Krsna and they were spontaneously attracted to their so-called sons in a mood of prema because they were actually Krsna disguising Himself, which shows that Krsna's attractiveness can't be covered even when He changes His appearance and behaviors. The mothers were astonished because the love they felt was not the same as usual and they didn't understand why. Here is another discussion about the nature of prema that may shed more light on this subject… raganugabhakti.freeforums.net/index.cgi?board=chap6&action=display&thread=45

Furthermore, the variegated nature of Goloka Vrindavan and Krsna Consciousness has it that prema is manifest in relation to everything because a premi-bhakta sees everything in relation to Krsna! Considering that the residents of Vrindavan (in this case the mothers of the cowherd boys)are under the spell of yogamaya, they will naturally have strong paternal affection to their own sons in Goloka, because everyone and everything in Goloka has such a strong connection with Krsna! That being said, their paternal affection increased when Krsna expanded Himself as the cowherd boys, simply because Krsna is the MOST attractive.
